Is this a red flag for parental alienation?

When going through a divorce, it is sometimes hard to keep track of all the changes that might happen in your daily life. For example, many parents do not realize that their child is suffering from parental alienation until the signs are too obvious to ignore.

But there are some red flags you can keep an eye out for. If you notice multiple warning signs, it is a big indication that you are contending with parental alienation.

The first signs of parental alienation

The Psychiatric Times discusses how parental alienation begins to manifest in children of divorce. The biggest sign is often the one parents notice first, and it involves how your child interacts with you. The main goal of parental alienation is to destroy the relationship you have with your kids. To do this, the alienating parent will go to great and sometimes abusive lengths. It often results in your child associating you with negative things and thus wanting nothing to do with you.

Your child will also not have a good answer to give when pressed about why they wish to avoid you. They may cite arbitrary issues, such as not liking your cooking or how well you clean your house. They might make up or repeat lies. They will almost always vehemently deny the involvement of the alienating parent, too.

Behavioral changes

You can also keep an eye out for subtler signs. For example, your child may seem more withdrawn than usual. On the other hand, they may seem more combative or lash out more often. If you notice any of these things happening, consider contacting a legal professional. They can help you decide what to do.
